The challenge

Many City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) cities lack the resources to ensure quality, equitable cancer care, and this leads to a lack of appropriate infrastructure as well as qualified human resources and treatment. This may also cause catastrophic financial shortages for patients and their families.
In order to improve city health financing, local ambassadors need to take action, advocate and catalyse change from within the system. However, local professionals, whether they belong to patient organisations, government institutions, think tanks or private institutions, often lack awareness of the tools required to become a change agent – and the possibilities this status provides.

The goal

To develop the capacity of local ambassadors to influence and generate change in cancer care financing.

How

C/Can has helped foster local and international knowledge exchange to catalyse transformation in health financing, bringing together change agents from diverse backgrounds (both institutional and geographic) to share ideas and experiences while co-creating solutions.
Learning from those experiences, the next step for C/Can in 2023 is to develop a change-maker programme for leaders in health financing, so as to create a network of ambassadors able to catalyse change at local level.

Impact / Achievements

Two workshops have been run successfully in Uruguay and Leon, Mexico. These workshops have helped encourage knowledge transfer and foster the development of a network of more than 40 professionals in Mexico.

Outputs

  • Local health financing co-creation workshops
  • Change-maker programme for leaders in health financing
Pablo Morales

Globally, stakeholders are coming together to find new solutions to sustainably finance modern and resilient health systems, but ultimately the necessary changes have to be locally driven. Altogether, we have a shared responsibility to support the development of the next generation of change-makers in health financing.
