A landmark agreement signals a collaborative and multisectoral response to tackle the rising cancer burden.

11 March 2024, Concepción, Chile – A significant step forward has been made in Gran Concepcion, Chile, as national government and health stakeholders have come together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the City Cancer Challenge Foundation to address the growing cancer burden in the city.
Representatives of the Biobío Region, the Secretary of State for Health of Concepción, the University of Concepción, the local authorities of the City of Concepción and the National Cancer Forum participated in an event where the agreement was signed, alongside stakeholders who work in cancer care and C/Can CEO Isabel Mestres.
In Chile, cancer is the first cause of death for adults and is responsible for 31,440 deaths and approximately 60,000 new cases each year. [1]
Dr. Eduardo Barra Jofré, Health Secretary for the Biobío Region said
Through this multi sectoral alliance with the City Cancer Challenge Foundation, we have the opportunity as a health sector to strengthen our work in prevention, early detection, diagnosis and timely access to cancer care, and find new approaches to research, health promotion and treatment.
The C/Can initiative supports cities to develop data-driven and sustainable cancer care solutions that are tailored to local contexts. The Foundation works with cities as they are crucial to driving meaningful change through local engagement and global partnerships. The C/Can methodology has demonstrated that cities are the perfect ecosystem to integrate health system improvements that can then be scaled nation-wide.
Equally, we hope that with the expertise of the Foundation, we will have new tools for technical assistance, which will allow all our collaborating institutions to move forward with the continuous improvements of our processes.
Dr Jofré added.
The C/Can City Engagement Process will be led by a local governance body known as the City Executive Committee. With the support of a dedicated city manager, they will lead on the identification of needs and the implementation of locally-created cancer care solutions.
Gran Concepción has worked in a multisectoral way to participate in the C/Can initiative, with involvement from the University of Concepcion, local professionals, scientific societies, patient organizations and the government. The city undertook a due diligence process in 2022, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the local cancer care landscape for stakeholder engagement to begin.

We are delighted to welcome Concepción as the 15th city to join the C/Can network. The collective commitment marks a crucial milestone for the Latin American city.
C/Can works with six other cities in the region; Arequipa (Peru), Asuncion (Paraguay), Cali (Colombia), Leon (Mexico), Porto Alegre (Brazil) and Rosario (Argentina). The Foundation launched a call for new cities at the end of 2023, with more to be announced soon.

11 de marzo de 2024, Concepción, Chile – Hoy se ha dado un paso significativo en el Gran Concepción, Chile, donde el gobierno nacional y las partes interesadas en la salud se han reunido para firmar un Memorando de Entendimiento con City Cancer Challenge Foundation para abordar la creciente carga de cáncer en la ciudad.
Representantes de la Región del Biobío, el Alcalde de Concepción, la Universidad de Concepción, el Servicio de Salud Concepción y el Foro Nacional del Cáncer participaron en un evento en el que se firmó el acuerdo, junto con participantes que trabajan en la atención oncológica y la directora general de C/Can, Isabel Mestres.

A través de esta alianza intersectorial con la Fundación City Cáncer Challenge, tenemos la oportunidad como sector salud de fortalecer el trabajo en prevención, detección precoz, diagnóstico y acceso oportuno a atención oncológica, sumando nuevas perspectivas en las tareas de investigación, promoción de la salud y tratamiento.
La iniciativa C/Can ayuda a las ciudades a desarrollar soluciones sostenibles y basadas en datos para la atención oncológica que se adapten a los contextos locales. La Fundación trabaja con las ciudades, porque son críticas para impulsar un cambio significativo a través del compromiso local y las asociaciones globales. La metodología C/Can ha demostrado que las ciudades son el ecosistema perfecto para integrar mejoras en los sistemas de salud que luego pueden ampliarse a escala nacional.
De igual forma, esperamos a través de esta fundación que tiene experticia en la materia, contar con nuevas herramientas en materia de asistencia técnica, que nos permita a todas las instituciones firmantes, avanzar en la mejora continua de nuestros procesos.

El City Engagement Process de C/Can estará dirigido por un comité local que se forma como Comité Ejecutivo de la Ciudad. Con el apoyo de un City Manager especializado, dirigirá la identificación de necesidades y la aplicación de soluciones locales para la atención oncológica.
El Gran Concepción ha trabajado de forma multisectorial para participar en la iniciativa C/Can, con la participación de la universidad, los profesionales locales, las sociedades científicas, las organizaciones de pacientes y el gobierno para garantizar el éxito de la iniciativa. La ciudad emprendió un proceso de diligencia en 2022, que condujo a una comprensión exhaustiva del panorama local de la atención oncológica para que comenzara la participación de las partes interesadas.
