Improving capacity and quality of cancer surgery in Yangon City
Yangon

The challenge

Yangon’s situation analysis report noted that there is not a single surgeon who specialises in cancer surgery in the city.  Instead, this role is performed by general surgeons in both public and private institutions.

The level of surgical care practice within specialist oncology teams needs to be developed, while the major operating theatres need to be upgraded and  manpower for key specialisms such as nursing, anaesthetics and OT work needs to be increased in the public sector to reduce waiting times for operations.

The goal

To improve the provision of timely and quality surgical interventions for oncology patients.

How

A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with local and international experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.

The-C/Can-Model
