Improving access to quality medical oncology services in Yangon City

The challenge

The Yangon City situation analysis report highlighted a lack of adequate facilities to provide medical oncology services, including specialised equipment and IT development, in public hospitals, and showed that the HR organisation of medical oncology departments was neither well-structured nor developed (there are no clinical pharmacists or certified chemotherapy nurses).
The ratio between high numbers of cancer patients and limited healthcare professionals and facilities is leading to poor quality of oncology services in Yangon City, a problem exacerbated by the erratic supply of basic chemo-medicine at public oncology centres and a lack of standardised protocols for common cancers.

The goal

To improve access to and quality of medical oncology (including haemato-oncology) services in Yangon City.

How

A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with relevant experts in the city and external experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.

* Project paused due to the current political situation in Myanmar.

Outputs

  • Minimal requirement for operation developed
  • Essential oncology medicine list developed
