The Kumasi situation analysis identified a number of challenges across the cancer care spectrum, among them a lack of human resources personnel in the following areas: laboratories and blood banks, radiology, surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology and palliative care.
Kumasi is developing a city-wide strategy to train human resources personnel in cancer care and prioritise allocation of resources, in line with the city’sits strategies, to improve both access to and the quality of key services. The human resources development plan will provide the basis for building strategic partnerships with international organisations and to increase local capacity to initiate training programmes that are currently unavailable.
A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with local and external experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.
