Kumasi’s situation analysis identified a number of challenges across the cancer care spectrum, including specific challenges for cancer surgery. These ranged from limited human resources personnel to a lack of protocols for cancer surgery and no dedicated operative theatres and post-operative areas.
The implementation of the training programme will enhance the quality and outcomes of surgery for breast cancer, cervical cancer and gastro-intestinal cancers. This, in turn, will contribute to the long-term improvement of cancer surgery in Kumasi and ensure better health outcomes for patients.
A local multidisciplinary, inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with local and external experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can).
A group of surgeons from Kumasi conducted observation visits to the reference centres of C/Can partners, and the local training programme will be organised by inviting the mentors from the reference centres to Kumasi. The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.
