Kumasi’s situational analysis identified a number of challenges facing cancer care services, notably radiotherapy services. The issues identified ranged from inadequate equipment for the city’s needs to a, lack of standard protocols, limited human resource and poor maintenance of equipment.
Radiotherapy services will follow a rigorous, harmonised quality assurance programme to ensure the safe and effective delivery of treatment, as well as protection of patients and radiotherapy personnel.
The radiotherapy development plan will provide the basis for investment and prioritisation of resource allocation in the field of radiotherapy to meet patient demands with quality services.
In the long term, this will likely result in a decrease in cancer recurrence rates in patients.
A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with local and external experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.
