Kumasi’s situational analysis highlighted a range of challenges in medical oncology services, including a lack of protocols for indication and chemotherapy drug administration, the absence of a context-specific essential medicines list, inadequate equipment and a lack of services such as bone marrow transplantation.
A plan to improve medical oncology services provides a platform for investments that will, in turn, support the advancement of medical oncology options for cancer patients in the city of Kumasi. Once realised, the plan will inform decision-makers of minimum operating requirements and resource allocation: this will maximise existing resources and future new investments in medical oncology infrastructure, in order to improve treatment outcomes of cancer patients. An essential oncology medicines list will help increase access to the best available and affordable drugs for patients in Kumasi.
A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project outputs, in consultation with local and external experts nominated by the technical cooperation partners of City Cancer Challenge (C/Can). The final outputs will be endorsed by the City Executive Committee and the relevant authorities for implementation.
