Greater Petaling

Malaysia

Greater Petaling joined C/Can a year after Malaysia hosted the World Cancer Congress, with the goal of maintaining the momentum of this global event and improving cancer survival rates in Malaysia, which are low compared to other upper-middle-income countries. Specifically, Greater Petaling is aiming to improve cross-city collaboration, promote knowledge-sharing and build on Malaysia’s strong political commitment to strengthen cancer care.

Needs and challenges in Greater Petaling

A multidisciplinary technical committee of local experts and institutions is currently undertaking an analysis of the state of cancer care in the city and identifying essential priorities.

Key achievements toward lasting change

The project team has already delivered a range of achievements to raise the quality and equity of cancer care through effective multidisciplinary collaboration:

“Civil society plays a vital role in building an inclusive, responsive, and accountable health system. We are proud to take part in this transformative initiative and are determined to ensure that the voices of communities—especially those most affected by cancer—are heard and integrated at every stage of the process.”

“This second edition of the program will build on the experience gained from the first edition as we continue to explore and analyse strategies for investing in women oncologists to ensure the sustainability of C/Can's work in the cities. We also aim to learn more about effective ways to support women in leadership roles and contribute to closing gender disparities in the healthcare sector.”
