One of the key needs identified in Kumasi’s situation analysis was the lack of adequate facilities to provide medical oncology services (including specialised equipment and IT development for adult and paediatric cancers) in public hospitals.
Intermediate outcomes include a multidisciplinary approach to paediatric cancer patient management, along with timely, accurate and high-quality cancer diagnosis and treatment. Reliable paediatric cancer data that is fed into the Kumasi cancer registry, and linked to all the city’s healthcare facilities, will provide a basis for research, policy and decision-making.

A local multidisciplinary and inter-institutional team was assembled to coordinate the development of the different project deliverables, in consultation with relevant experts in the city and technical assistance partners.
The project is expected to produce more efficient referral mechanisms between the paediatric departments of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which will ensure continuity of care and help reduce treatment abandonment. The project will also train healthcare professionals to recognise early warning signs and to conduct basic diagnosis and management of childhood cancers, and will use community engagement to raise public awareness of the early warning signs and symptoms of childhood cancers.
Since the share care network was launched, 24 institutions have joined and 120 healthcare professionals have been trained in the referral system, using the specially designed app on their smartphones.
The project will support the authorities in data-driven policy making and the ongoing implementation of the project is strengthening a multidisciplinary approach to paediatric cancer patient management; improving timely, quality, and accurate cancer diagnosis and treatment. Reliable paediatric cancer data fed into the Kumasi cancer registry linked to all the city’s healthcare facilities will continue to provide a basis for research, policy and decision making.
