Project lead
Dr. Luis Abraham Zúñiga Vázquez, Dr. Miguel Angel Guerrero Ramos
Areas of action

The challenge

  • Decisions regarding the surgical management of cancer vary widely depending on the availability of resources, access to healthcare coverage, and the institutional background in which the surgeon received training.
  • There is no established institutional culture, neither in public nor private healthcare settings, that consistently standardises multidisciplinary, collegial decision-making processes.
  • Lack of multidisciplinary surgical systematised management for colorectal and breast  cancer.

The goal

  • To increase access and accelerate initiation of surgical treatment for colorectal and breast cancer through patient management in designated medical units with quality, standardised multidisciplinary management.

The How

  • Working with Hospital Aranda de la Parra and Hospital Christus Muguerza Altagracia project teams and international experts develop multidisciplinary surgical management, standardised protocols and a continuous capacity building plan.

Outputs

  • Design and implement a model for multidisciplinary surgical management of colorectal cancer based on standardised protocols.
  • Design and implement a model for multidisciplinary surgical management of breast  cancer based on standardised protocols.
