Strengthening Access and Capacity for Radiotherapy Services in Phnom Penh
Project lead
Mel Mora
Implementation
Cycle I

The challenge

  • Demand for radiotherapy in Cambodia far exceeds current capacity, leading to long waiting times and restricted access to treatment.
  • Radiotherapy services are limited to a small number of facilities, primarily concentrated in Phnom Penh, creating geographic and financial barriers for patients.
  • Existing radiotherapy infrastructure is insufficient and overburdened, with frequent maintenance challenges and service interruptions.
  • There is a critical shortage of trained radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and radiotherapy technologists.
  • Structured training programmes and coordinated planning are not yet fully in place, which limits the safe expansion of radiotherapy services.

The goal

  • To improve access to radiotherapy services in the city.

The How

  • Developing a strategic radiotherapy development plan to address current and future service demand.
  • Strengthening coordination of radiotherapy services, infrastructure, equipment, and maintenance planning.
  • Building workforce capacity through training and professional development for radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and radiotherapy technologists.
  • Reviewing and revising the medical technologist training curriculum to strengthen education for Radiation Therapy Technologists.
  • Facilitating short-term fellowships and scientific visits to reference centres for specialised capacity building.
  • Aligning radiotherapy strengthening efforts with national priorities outlined in Cambodia’s National Cancer Control Plan.

Outputs

  • Radiotherapy development plan with short-, medium-, and long-term goals to meet clinical demand.
  • Revised medical technologist syllabus for the education and training of Radiation Therapy Technologists/ Radiation Therapists (RTTs).
  • Short-term fellowship training opportunities for radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and RTTs.
