Radiology and Nuclear Medicine

Strengthening Quality and Standardisation or Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Services for Cancer Care for Phnom Penh
Project lead
Varoeun Soley
Implementation
Cycle I

The challenge

  • Radiology and nuclear medicine services show uneven availability across institutions.
  • Advanced imaging modalities and nuclear medicine services are limited by infrastructure gaps, high costs, and shortages of specialised professionals.
  • Quality assurance, quality control, and written protocols are inconsistently applied, affecting the accuracy and reliability of imaging results.
  • Gaps in the use of standardised imaging reporting formats affect effective clinical decision-making and continuity of cancer care.
  • These gaps constrain early diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning, ultimately impacting cancer outcomes.

The goal

  • To strengthen the quality of radiology and nuclear medicine services in the city.

The How

  • Establishing and implementing basic Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Control (QC) standards and standard operating procedures for radiology and nuclear medicine services across public and private hospitals.
  • Harmonising structural and synoptic diagnostic imaging reporting formats for priority cancers, including breast, colorectal, and cervical cancer.
  • Strengthening institutional capacity through advocacy and targeted capacity development initiatives.
  • Supporting improved consistency, safety, and reliability of diagnostic imaging services across the city.

Outputs

  • QA/QC standards for radiology services.
  • QA/QC standards for nuclear medicine services.
  • Harmonised structural and synoptic diagnostic imaging reporting formats for prioritised tumours across public and private providers.
