Advancing Quality Cancer Care Through Multidisciplinary Practice in León
Project lead
Dr. Rosa Olivia Guerra Vázquez
Areas of action

The challenge

  • In León, gaps in coordination, workforce capacity, and standardised clinical processes limit timely access to quality breast cancer care. The absence of clear, multidisciplinary care pathways contributes to delays in treatment initiation, variability in clinical decision-making, and uneven access to evidence-based therapies.
  •  Shortages of trained specialists, limited opportunities for continuous professional development, and weak safety and quality assurance mechanisms place additional strain on healthcare teams and patient outcomes.
  • Fragmented communication and limited collaboration across institutions further hinder continuity of care and the effective functioning of multidisciplinary teams, underscoring the need for structured, integrated approaches to breast cancer management.

The goal

  • Design and implement a multidisciplinary management pathway for breast cancer patients at Hospital General de León to reduce variability in care, shorten treatment timelines
  • Increasing survival and quality of patient life  while establishing a scalable and replicable model that can be extended to other healthcare institutions across the city.

The How

  • Design and implement with the collaboration of experts, local professionals and health authorities the mechanisms for multidisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration and coordination for the management of breast cancer patients.
  • Leverage expert academic input and institutional involvement in the design of a resource stratified pathway that will enable cross-departmental collaboration, improve the patient experience and create a model that can be replicated by other institutions in the city.

Outputs

  • Breast Cancer patient management pathways (resource stratified) in the city of León.
  • Model for multidisciplinary breast cancer management in the city of León.
