Arequipa currently lacks positron emission tomography (PET) and a cyclotron facility for local radiopharmaceutical production, which significantly limits access to advanced cancer diagnostics and contributes to prolonged waiting times for oncological assessments.
Additionally, there is a critical shortage of trained medical physicists, nuclear medicine technologists, and pharmacists specialized in the preparation and handling of radiopharmaceuticals, further restricting service expansion and safe operation.
Understand and propose a way forward to increase the capacity of nuclear medicine services in the public sector in Arequipa City and the Macro South Region, Peru.
Work with nuclear medicine professionals to prepare a development plan, identify training needs, and perform a costing and budgeting exercise, integrating these documents into the Multiannual Investment Schedule, and support the preparation of technical cooperation projects with the Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy IPEN and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Conduct capacity development activities including scientific visits and training courses according to the identified needs of the city.
