The challenge

Multidisciplinary team (MDT) care is essential for high-quality cancer treatment, yet its implementation in Phnom Penh remains inconsistent.
MDT practices are not standardised across institutions, with citywide operational guidelines to guide or monitor MDT case discussions not yet in place.
Resource constraints and workforce shortages limit the effective participation of oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, and specialised nurses in MDTs.
Continuing professional education opportunities related to MDT practice are limited.
Gaps in data management and monitoring systems reduce the ability to evaluate MDT performance and its impact on patient outcomes.
These challenges hinder coordinated decision-making, quality assurance, and patient safety in cancer care.

The goal

To improve cancer survival rates by improving the quality of care provided to cancer patients.

The How

Developing a citywide operational guideline to standardise MDT case discussions across hospitals providing cancer care.
Defining roles, workflows, and minimum requirements for effective MDT functioning.
Building the capacity of multidisciplinary cancer care professionals to apply MDT principles in routine clinical practice.
Supporting monitoring and evaluation of MDT implementation to promote quality, safety, and consistency of care.
Aligning MDT strengthening efforts with national clinical practice guidelines under development by the Ministry of Health.

Outputs

Operational guidelines for implementation and monitoring of MDT case discussion.
Capacity development for multidisciplinary cancer care professionals for MDT case discussion.
