Information Systems and Data in Léon

Strengthening Cancer Data & Information Systems in León for Coordinated and Quality Cancer Care
Project lead
Dr. Blanca Olivia Murillo Ortíz
Areas of action

The challenge

  • Fragmented health information systems across subsystems and care levels limit data sharing and coordination in Mexico’s National Health System.
  • Healthcare providers lack access to integrated patient data, making it difficult to coordinate care and guide patients through the health system.
  • Absence of unified cancer data at the local level hinders informed decision-making, limits visibility of needs, and slows efforts to improve cancer care quality and access.

The goal

  • Designing control mechanisms to achieve understanding, coordination and implementation of an information systems strategy between existing cancer registration initiatives at the federal and state level, to consolidate a single registration project for León.
  • Improve the understanding of comprehensive cancer care data and work to develop a way to strengthen data-informed decision-making at local and national levels.

The How

  • Implement the National Research and Development Programme for Registries at a multiinstitutional level in Guanajuato with the support of the National Institute of Cancer and the Mexican Social Insurance Institute.
  • Mapping of Digital Health and information systems for cancer care t with the collaboration of the National Institute of Public Health, the National Population-Based Cancer Registry, and the Mexican Social Security Institute.

Outputs

  • Adoption of the National Population Based Cancer Registry strategy for the  city of Leon.
  • Mapping and Analysis of the status of Digital Health in the City.
