Health Systems and Management

Improving Cancer Care Continuity Through Collaborative Health Systems Coordination in León
Project lead
Dr. Juan José de Jesús Bustamante Noriega
Areas of action

The challenge

  • Mexico’s segmented and fragmented health system and weak inter-institutional collaboration hinder access to consistent, high-quality care, with different care pathways for patients.
  • In León, despite multiple cancer care institutions and private  providers, access remains unequal due to low public awareness, patient education, and a lack of coordination, 71% of patients reported receiving no information about their treatment.

The goal

  • Improve communication and coordination efforts in cancer care within each institution, to support the design of a more integrated model.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information about services provided at each hospital and each phase of care provision.
  • Developing skills in frontline professionals for the timely identification of cancer and the detection of adverse reactions to cancer drugs.

The How

  • Work with healthcare professionals from private and public institutions to increase collaboration and co-develop stronger communication models and training materials.

Outputs

  • Document, strengthen and socialise inter-institutional services in oncological care to improve collaborations between institutions for the care of cancer patients.
  • Implement a virtual training program for early diagnosis and management of side effects of oncological treatment and follow-up for first and second level health personnel.
