Implementation
Cycle I

The challenge

  • Reliable cancer data are essential for effective cancer control planning, yet Cambodia lacks comprehensive and integrated cancer information systems.
  • Population-based cancer registry and hospital-based cancer data remain fragmented, paper-based, and largely unstandardised.
  • Cancer data collected by major hospitals are siloed and not integrated into national or city-level systems, limiting the ability to monitor trends, plan services, and allocate resources.
  • Many health facilities continue to rely on paper records or standalone digital systems with limited interoperability.
  • Digital infrastructure remains limited, with challenges related to outdated hardware, connectivity, and the availability of standardised datasets, affecting data quality and use.
  • These gaps limit evidence-based decision-making at both facility and policy levels and hinder the development of effective cancer control strategies.

The goal

  • To contribute to improving health information and the database system for cancer care in Phnom Penh.

The How

  • Strengthening and standardising hospital-based cancer registries (HBCR) across public and private hospitals in Phnom Penh.
  • Identifying hospitals currently implementing HBCR and those requiring initial implementation.
  • Building the capacity of key stakeholders in cancer data collection, management, and use.
  • Assessing and harmonising cancer data sets and registry variables across institutions.
  • Reviewing and standardising IT tools and software used for HBCR.
  • Developing a strategic development plan for HBCR to support scalability and future integration with national health information systems.

Outputs

  • Capacity development of Cancer Registry team.
  • Development plan for Hospital-based cancer registry – standardise the data set, IT software, and training.
