Dr Verna Vanderpuye MBChB, FWACS,FGCP,FASCO is a senior consultant clinical oncologist and Deputy Director at the National Centre of Radiotherapy, Oncology and Nuclear Medicine, Korle-bu Teaching Hospital, Accra Ghana in West Africa since the year 2000.
She is an adjunct Professor at the Queens University in Canada, Department Of Oncology and is affiliated to the University of Ghana and faculty board member of the oncology and radiotherapy division of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (postgraduate medical training ). Her areas of clinical and research interest are breast, genitourinary, gastrointestinal , sarcoma and lung cancer, especially the management of these cancers in Africa and other LMIC. She has past/present leadership roles at African Organisation of Research and Training in Cancer and served on several committees of NCCN sub Saharan resource stratified guidelines, WHO, ESMO, International Association on Study of Lung Cancer and other local , regional and international cancer organisations which influence global cancer care.
She is the immediate past chair of the International Affairs committee of ASCO. She is a Co-editor, editorial board member and reviewer of several relevant cancer journals and serves as co-PI and External advisory board member of several international research training grants administered in Africa and recipient of the 2019 “international women who conquer cancer mentorship award” by conquer cancer foundation of ASCO. Dr Vanderpuye has participated in several Lancet commissions.
She has authored/co-authored over 100 peer-reviewed journal publications, several book chapters, and technical documents, mostly on delivering cancer care in LMIC.
