Background

A successful response to global health challenges often relies on a combination of coordinated global initiatives and contextualised solutions that address the specific needs of local healthcare systems. However, translating global strategies and knowledge—often led by high-income countries—into local implementation remains a significant challenge.

At C/Can, we recognise that cities are core actors in the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs) and play a crucial role in promoting health for all. By harnessing the power of research, innovation, and multidisciplinary collaboration, cities can become catalysts for improving cancer outcomes, advancing cancer care practices, and addressing the unique needs of their diverse populations.

C/Can has recently announced a new initiative to create evidence on cancer care in Low-and-middle-income countries while implementing locally-led interventions. By setting a strong research agenda and working collaboratively with cities, gaps between policy and practice could be bridged.

Workshop’s Objectives

  1. To launch the new C/Can Research Initiative amongst C/Can Network Cities.
  2. Discuss on how capacity development in implementation science plays a key role in the development and execution of C/Can’s novel research initiative, as means to amplify its impact and ensure sustainability.
    • Presentation #1: a presentation on how implementation science could bridge the gap between knowledge to policy and practice and achieve better health outcomes.
    • Presentation #2: to be proposed
  3. A panel discussion: to hear from C/Can city experts on the value of locally-led research, experiences from seed grantees; participants from the International Collaboration for Research Methods Development in Oncology (CReDO) workshop, participants from the UOM Implementation Science Workshop Attendees.
  4. Closing: How C/Can’s research initiative could, ideally, lead to cities as knowledge hubs on cancer care, generating key learnings to inform C/Can’s technical cooperation as well as the global health community.

Expected Outcomes from the Workshop

  1. Project planning: research oriented-output – locally led
  2. Implementation science will work with C/Can model – working with city level
  3. Align with Research Strategy – i.e., local first author
