On 3 March 2019, the City Cancer Challenge was officially launched in Kigali with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding by the Minister of Health, Hon. Dr Diane Gashumba and the Mayor of the City of Kigali, Hon. Rwakazina Marie-Chantal together with the City Cancer Challenge Foundation, the Rwanda Palliative Care and Hospice Organisation and Polyfam Clinic, outlining a two-year collaboration aimed at improving access to quality cancer care for the citizens of Kigali. Attended by over 70 high-level representatives from the City of Kigali, Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Centre, Rwanda National Police, health institutions, industry, and the CEO of Amref International, the event demonstrated the high level of political will for addressing cancer care across all sectors.

Speaking at the launch ceremony, Hon. Dr Patrick Ndimubanzi, the State Minister of Public and Primary healthcare referred to the “strong commitment of President Kagame to increasing investment in healthcare, including for NCDs, through public-private partnership” and “the potential for City Cancer Challenge Kigali to be a model both in the country and region”.

Following the launch event, a meeting of the C/Can Kigali Executive Committee and Technical Committee was held to discuss the next phase of work – roll-out of a city-wide needs assessment to identify capacities and gaps in the delivery of cancer care in four key areas: management of services, core clinical services, quality, and community access and integrated care. As part of C/Can’s commitment to support and foster city-to-city learning and exchange, Dr Fred Awittor, C/Can City Manager, Kumasi, and Dr Ernest Osei-Bonsu, member of the Kumasi Executive Committee joined this meeting, sharing lessons learned and experience from their recently completed needs assessment process in Kumasi. Meeting Date: 3 March 2019 | Meeting Location: AHAIC Kigali Hon.
